Singapore has public libraries situated in every township in the country, which are over 24.
Does not sound like much at first glance? It will, if you try to imagine that many libraries within a country that has a land area that is smaller than New York City.
Besides these are 31 libraries that are affiliated to schools, government agencies and the like.
The entire intensive network of Singapore falls under the national library Board of Singapore or NLB.
The Location
The office of NLB is in the National library building located in Victoria Street, one bus stop from Bugis Junction.
You cannot miss the impressive aerodynamic 16 storey metallic grey structures interlinked by sky bridges.
The building encloses the Central lending library, Drama centre and seven levels of reference sections.
The new building was consecrated in 2005 when it moved fro Stamford road and encompasses a much bigger space than the older library.

The entire building has a glass façade so you can get a fabulous view of the city no matter which level you are in.
The highly insulated glass gives you a great view but shuts out all the sounds of the bustling city, keeping the interior of the building in pin drop silence as a library should be.

Even the 3 bubble elevators offer views that make you realize that you are cosily isolated while being in the middle of the city.
The 16th floor of the building is generally restricted to functions and events and has a closed viewing pod.
From this pod you can look as far as some overlying Indonesian islands while standing in the central civic district of Singapore.
The national library evokes a sense of responsibility in you. The building is in no way similar to the grand old oak finished library’s of history yet you feel a sense of being surrounded by history and knowledge in this neatly organized airy structure.
There are computers located in many stations in the library where you can do a very easy catalogue search.
Education is very important in Singapore and young children already encourage to read the books.
If you cannot find what you need there are always the ever-helpful library staff.
Tired after hours of intense research? You can go down to the café downstairs and relax with a nice cup of hot coffee or a god mix of local delights and western cuisine.
It’s a place where you don’t need to really have company. You can relax just as well by looking into the many mini gardens around the building and introspect.
Like we said before, the library is in the middle of the city and therefore very approachable.

The nearest MRT station is Bugis junction and you exit in the direction of Bugis junction and the library is just a few yards walk.
The library is situated in between Bugis Junction and Bras Basah Complex. So if you are taking a bus, you can alight at any of these two bus stops
