Yale-NUS College
SINGAPORE: Singapore's first liberal arts college, Yale-NUS College, is taking in 157 students from 26 countries as its first cohort of students.
 
The students were chosen from more than 11,400 applications from over 130 countries.
 
In a statement issued on Sunday, Yale-NUS said 97 of the students, or 62 per cent of the cohort, are Singaporean.
 
Thirty-two students come from other parts of Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
 
The remaining students are from the US, Canada, UK, other parts of Europe, Africa and South America.
 
The college said in addition to the inaugural class, 63 Singaporeans have committed to start at Yale-NUS in the next two years after they complete their national service.
 
Classes for the first intake, which include 87 women and 70 men, will begin in August 2013.
 
Yale-NUS said it plans to grow its class size to 250 students over the next few years.
 
Describing its inaugural class as possessing "stellar academic credentials", Yale-NUS said it looks at more than the applicants' examinations results in selecting its students.
 
It also considers interviews, recommendations, essays and applicants' extracurricular records in the process.
