Background
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will issue a new circulation coin series by the middle of 2013. The Third Series coins mark Singapore’s progress as a nation. The coin designs feature national icons and landmarks.

All denominations of the new coin series will be issued simultaneously, and will be made available at retail banks in Singapore from the issue date. All past and existing series coins will remain legal tender and the public can continue to use them for payment alongside the new coins.

Coin-operated machines at MRT/LRT stations will be calibrated before the launch to accept both existing and new series coins. MAS has also been working with businesses with coin-operated facilities such as vending machine operators and supermarkets to prepare them for the launch of the new coins. These other coin-operated machines will be calibrated in phases due to technical and cost considerations.

The Second Series coins were introduced between 1985 and 1987 and have been in circulation for more than 25 years.

The Third Series coins feature designs that showcase icons and landmarks of our nation, economy and society.

The security features in the new coins include a customised electromagnetic signature (EMS) for each denomination; and for the 1-dollar coin, a bi-metallic composition (outer ring is brass plated and inner circle is nickel plated) and laser mark micro-engraving of the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore.

Features

Designs
The coins depict well known icons and landmarks of Singapore.

The Merlion, a renowned icon of Singapore, is featured on the 1-dollar coin.

The Port of Singapore, one of the busiest ports in the world, is featured on the 50-cent coin.

Changi Airport, one of the best airports in the world, is featured on the 20-cent coin.

Public Housing, home to more than 80% of Singaporeans, is featured on the 10-cent coin.

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, centre for performing arts in Singapore, is featured on the 5-cent coin.

A common unifying symbol, the lion-head, can be found on all denominations.

The Singapore Coat of Arms has been retained on the obverse of the coins as it is a recognised symbol of the legal tender status of Singapore coins.

The new coins have larger denomination numerals for easy identification.

Progressive Sizing
The new series coins are progressively sized by denomination, with the 5-cent coin being the smallest and the 1-dollar coin being the largest. To help the public familiarise themselves with the new series, the 5-cent, 10-cent and 20-cent coins have been kept as close to the sizes of those in the Second Series. The main changes are in the sizes of the 50-cent and 1-dollar coin

Coin Material
The new series coins are minted on multi-ply plated steel comprising a steel core electroplated with three layers of metals - nickel over copper over nickel for silver-coloured coins; brass over copper over nickel for gold-coloured coins. The new series coins are generally lighter in weight and produce a lower pitch tone when struck against hard objects.

Security
Each denomination of the new series has a customised electromagnetic signature (EMS), which allows vending machines to detect and reject counterfeit or foreign coins. Additional security features on the 1-dollar coin include a bi-metallic composition (outer ring is brass plated and inner circle is nickel plated) and laser mark micro-engraving of the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore.
