QNS 3: What is the difference between private and public institutions?
A: Public Schools are government schools. They are registered and managed by the Ministry of Education, Singapore.In Singapore, there are 11 gazetted public holidays and three scheduled school holidays in a calendar year.

Private Schools- There are various types of private schools in Singapore. Private schools are generally run by private companies or non-profit organisations. There are also some private institutions that receive public funds, eg. NAFA (The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts), SMU (Singapore Management University) and LASALLE-SIA college of the Arts

QNS 4: Do I need a Visa and Student's Pass to study in Singapore?
A: A foreigner must apply for a Student's Pass if he/she has been accepted by an educational institution to pursue full-time studies in Singapore, unless he/she is a:.
• Dependant's Pass holder studying in a Government/ Government-Aided/ Independent school/ Foreign System School/ Kindergarten registered with MOE or Childcare centre licensed by MCYS;
• Immigration Exemption Order holder; or
• Visitor who has been granted a short term Visit Pass at the Singapore Checkpoint and wish to attend a short course that can be completed within the validity of the initial Visit Pass granted to him/her at the Singapore Checkpoint or 30 days, whichever is shorter.
Upon receiving the Letter of Acceptance from the school which is valid for 2 weeks, the applicant must proceed to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) to apply for a Student’s Pass. For applicants who require a visa to enter Singapore, please ensure that your application for the Student Pass is submitted to the ICA at least 2 months and not more than 6 months before the commencement date of the course.
Note: For PRC national who wishes to pursue a language, commercial, vocational or fine arts course at private schools in Singapore (with the exception of students taking a degree or postgraduate degree course and students studying at PEI schools), applicant is required to submit Student's Pass application through the Singapore Embassy in Beijing.

QNS 5: As a foreign student at the local universities or polytechnics with a student pass,  can I do part-time work during term time?
A: Foreign students are not allowed to engage in any form of employment in Singapore, whether during term time or vacation time, unless they are granted Work Pass exemption under the Employment of Foreign Manpower (Work Pass Exemptions) Notification. The details of the exemption notification, which includes foreign students on vacation and part time employment of foreign students, are shown below.

Exemption Notification: Foreign Students on Vacation
A Work Pass is not required for a foreign student if he/she is of 14 years of age or above, on vacation, and a full-time matriculated or registered student in one of the institutions approved by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

Exemption Notification: Part-time Employment of Foreign Students
A Work Pass is not required for a foreign student if he/she works a maximum of 16 hours a week and is a full-time matriculated or registered student in one of the institutions approved by MOM.
