Park Regis Singapore hotel

StayWell Hospitality Group who are based in Australia have expanded their comfort zone and opened their first Asian four-star Park Regis hotel which boasts plenty of comfort and convenience but it is no coincidence that it is located a five-minute taxi ride away from Raffles Place Central Business District (CBD) which makes it a prime target for the business market.
The 203 standard/executive room property strives for an urban-resort ambience and it does manage to bring in leisure guests which, in a way, makes it appear that it has no certain identity or target market; it is neither a fully fledged business resort nor is it entirely a city resort but we are going to have a closer look which will reveal all.

The Location

Park Regis Singapore Reviews - closer look
The new hotel does not have any links with the existing Park Hyatt or St Regis groups and is located at 23 Merchant Road, Singapore (Telephone 65/6818-8888) with double rooms starting at $280. It is positioned across the road from the Clarke Quay entertainment quarter which also houses the Clarke Quay MRT subway station to enable accessible travel to all of the key areas of Singapore. It is worth asking the concierge for a business card sized map as the entrance of the hotel is on New Market Road (off Havelock Road) which can be difficult for taxi drivers to access.
The Look

Park Regis Singapore Reviews - Interior Look
The Australian firm Woodhead, who also decorated two terminals at the Changi airport, were given the responsibility for the architectural and interior design of the hotel. The design theme of the hotel is corporate chic and this neutral colour palette of beiges and browns is consistent throughout the interior and is complemented with subtle and tactful motifs of flowers and branches.
The Service
Entering a business hotel, you tend to have higher expectations of the staff then you would get in a Holiday Inn but here, they are more friendly and obliging rather than the sophisticated air that greets you at a hotel like the Ritz Carlton. Having said that, we did have a few encounters that were not as sociable for example when we asked for a second room key and were quizzed as to where the first key was and when the receptionist who had just checked us in asked for our birthdates as a security check.
The Rooms

Park Regis Singapore Reviews - The Room
The hotel has four different categories of bright and spacious rooms which start from 22 square metres and vary in size and view. They are all open plan with the bedroom and bathroom in one separated only be strategically placed mirrors, a frosted glass shower screen and a generously proportioned sink unit which conceals the bar fridge and tea facilities. This setup could cause privacy problems if office colleagues were sharing a room. There are no bathtubs in any of the rooms and the toiletries are all made by the well-known London manufacturer, the White Company.
The Merchant room features brightly coloured silk bed covers and rugs against the warm, comforting gray and brown tones of the decor. There is a day bed along the large window to sit and enjoy the view or read a book in natural sunlight and the curtains are double-lined to keep out the morning light and ensure you get a good night’s rest.
The most desirable rooms of the hotel are the Merchant rooms as they face the 25 metre outdoor swimming pool and stunning cascading waterfall feature and the upper floor Regis rooms have the additional bonus of a fantastic view of the Clark Quay and river. The Quay rooms lead directly onto the pool deck and although this can be idyllic, it can also get quite noisy at busy times.
The Facilities
Considering that the hotel leans towards the business market, it is surprising that you do not have access to Wi-Fi in your rooms and if you wish to use your laptop or gadgets, you need to work from the lobby which is not ideal if you are hoping to complete confidential tasks. If you want to access Broadband internet from your room, you need to pay; S$6 for half an hour or S$30 for 24 hours which is quite expensive in our opinion for something which should be inclusive. There is however a business centre which offers guests access to two iMac workstations but these are available at a first come, first serve basis for 20 minute slots.
There is an all day dining restaurant, Suite 23, which serves local Asian and Australian cuisine and a small but adequate fitness centre for those who are motivated enough have an invigorating session although unfortunately, there are no spa facilities.
