African roots take pride in this lovely and scenic walk-in aviary, considered until today the worlds largest. Visitors can make a choice of arriving on foot or via the African Waterfall Aviary station.
Either way you will be experiencing an African immersion. On foot, you will be awed by the African inspired entrance sign with a snake, an African bird, the life-size African warriors in full regalia and bravado to welcome you and an African hut adorned with artifacts and African art.
Nearby African jars seemingly placed at random are displayed. A Lily Pond on the left completes the idyllic, rustic and dreamy setting.
Perhaps more dramatic is the arrival by Panorail. Owing to the change from sunlight to darkness visitors will experience when on board. One will then be pleasantly surprise upon their arrival to the African Waterfall Aviary Station as the Panorail glides entry into the aviary.
The cultural deja vu unfolds as you alight at the African Waterfall Aviary station platform. The impressive height of the covered aviary is a delight as one hears the live chirping of the obviously happy birds.
The sheltered structure to one’s left shows hanging coconuts, which are love nests for the famed African birds -Black-masked Lovebirds. These birds pair for life and the consistent pecking and kissing of both male and female birds truly deserves the name “love birds.” Their bright yellow feathers and a mask-liked spray of black covering their eyes give a striking contrast which makes these birds hard to miss. |
Like all its other three walk-in aviaries, the African Waterfall Aviary boasts of a covered ceiling with netting in order to make sure blue skies and sunlight are beamed into the setting. Raised to a height of 35 metres or 13 apartment floors high, it allows birds to have a lot of space for flying and gliding merrily in this paradise.
As you stroll towards the suspension bridge, African bird feeders are abundant and if you tread carefully without making a sound you will observe how birds feed. Usually Starlings of different species and Whydahs are common. The variety of colourful Starlings from Superb, Purple Glossy, Lesser Blue-eared, Wattled, Starling, Violet, Hildebrandt and Emerald Starlings create such a dazzling sparkle and colour in this exhibit hard to forget.
The Suspended Bridge displays a wide variety of African art, which leaves one to slowly interpret the signs and symbols it evokes. African art with its intricate geometric patterns, engravings and drawings usually reflect day-to-day stories of African life.
Nowhere has a bridge with such African design become suddenly so tastefully significant. From the bridge one can have a panoramic view of the valley-like ambience of the aviary. On the opposite side, as one raises their eyes to the sky; one can trail the flow of the world’s highest waterfall in an aviary. Visitors may be pleasantly surprised to see African Crowned Cranes cooling and drinking water from the top of the waterfall oblivious to the visitors by gushing in disbelief.
From the bridge, sudden fleeting birds perch and glide without a care as they gregariously socialise with other feathered pals.
Beside the Waterfall is an African Hut, which completes the semblance of a natural African tropical rainforest, commonly found in Central Africa.
1,500 free-flying African birds are now residents of this remarkable “Shangri-la”. There is a total of 50 species of birds, comprising of Starlings, Turacos, Carmine Bee-eaters, Rollers, Red and Yellow Barbet, Whydahs, Weavers, Parrots, White-Faced Tree Ducks, Helmeted Guinea fowls, South African Crowned Cranes and Egyptian Geese to name a few other special features include: two Observation Posts also part of the shelter area, where one can sit and take a leisurely break from the climb. From these posts, one can view the waterfall and observe exceptionally shy birds at close proximity.
