In order to manage traffic congestion in land-scarce Singapore, car ownership is regulated and the use of public transport is encouraged. Car ownership in Singapore is costly but many still prefer to own one.
 
An essential pre-requisite before you can register a car is to secure a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) through an open bidding exercise, which entitles you to own a vehicle in Singapore. Here are a few things you will need to know when buying a car in Singapore, such as the terms of motor vehicle insurance policies and how to calculate the Open Market Value of your vehicle.
 
You will also come across a host of acronyms – ERP, PARF etc – that refer to the various aspects of maintaining a car in Singapore. See the Land Transport Authority’s list of common keywords.
 
To minimise congestion on the roads, the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) was introduced. All motorists will be charged a fee for road usage depending on the location and time of day.
